Blue is the quietly sophisticated end of the Christmas jumper rail. Where red shouts, blue suggests – and it is the colour that gets you closest to the Scandinavian look that has been slowly taking over festive knitwear for the last decade.
There is a reason it works so well. Blue is the colour of winter rather than the colour of Christmas: icy pale blues, deep midnight navy, the sort of slate blue that makes a snowflake motif look like actual weather instead of a cartoon. Nordic Fair Isle patterns in navy and cream are about as good as this whole category gets, and they are the ones you will still be wearing in February without feeling odd about it.
It is also the practical choice for anybody who finds red overwhelming, and a navy knit will sit happily with jeans, grey trousers or black without any thought required. White and silver motifs pop beautifully against a dark blue base, and pale blue with white snowflakes is about as wintry as knitwear gets.
