Grey Christmas jumpers

Grey is the Christmas jumper you can wear to work. That is not a backhanded compliment – it is the single most useful thing any festive knit can do, and grey does it better than any other colour on this site.

Here is the problem it solves. Plenty of offices do a Christmas jumper day, and plenty of people want to join in without turning up to a client meeting dressed as a reindeer. A marl grey knit with a small embroidered motif gets you fully credited as having made the effort while remaining, unmistakably, a jumper. It is the diplomatic answer, and it is the one that survives into the new year instead of going into a drawer on the 27th.

Grey also does something no other base colour manages: it makes everything else look more expensive. Cream and white Fair Isle on grey looks like proper knitwear rather than novelty. A single red motif on marl grey has more impact than the same motif on red ever will. And grey marl flatters nearly everybody, which is more than can be said for bright white.
