Elves do the actual work. Santa gets the credit, the sherry and the biscuits, and somewhere behind the scenes an enormous unionised workforce is assembling toys at a pace that does not bear thinking about. The elf Christmas jumper is, we would argue, a gesture of solidarity.
Design-wise, elves give you things that Santa does not. Pointed ears and striped hats. Green and red stripes together, which should not work and absolutely does. Curly-toed boots with bells. Faces rendered as a knitted motif, which is easier to do well in yarn than a beard is. And a rich seam of slogans about being Santa’s favourite, being on the naughty list, or being in charge of the elf department, all of which are excellent on a child and even better on a six-foot adult.
Elf jumpers are particularly good for families and for offices, because the joke scales – you can have one elf or fifteen and it only gets funnier. They are also the single most popular design in children’s sizes on this site, which tells you something. Have a look at the matching family section if you are tempted to go properly all in.
