This is where the designs that refuse to sit in any other category end up, and it is genuinely the most interesting section on the site to browse. Geometric clashes, retro seventies colour palettes, abstract prints, neon, optical patterns, jumpers that are clearly Christmassy without containing a single recognisable Christmas object.
Funky is the answer to a specific complaint we hear a lot: that festive knitwear is all reindeer and snowmen, and some people would like to look like they dressed themselves. These are the jumpers for that. Bold colour blocking, zigzags, repeated shapes, prints that borrow from ski wear and seventies wallpaper in roughly equal measure, and the occasional thing that looks like a Christmas tree put through a kaleidoscope.
They tend to be the most genuinely wearable knits here, precisely because they are not tied to the 25th – an abstract pattern in festive colours has no expiry date in the way that a jumper with Santa’s face on it does. They are also the ones most likely to get asked about, which is a different sort of compliment from the one a novelty knit earns. A smaller section than the big motif categories, but worth a slow look.
