A pile of wrapped presents is, visually, an extremely good thing to put on a jumper: bright rectangles, ribbons, bows, and a riot of colour that gives a knit designer something to work with. It is also the single most on-message motif in Christmas – whatever else the season has become, this part is not in dispute.
The designs here mostly go one of two ways. There is the straightforward pile of gifts under a tree, which is cheerful and reads instantly, and often comes with ribbon detail picked out in metallic thread. And then there is the wrapping-paper jumper, where the whole garment is printed as if it were gift wrap – stripes, polka dots, repeated ribbons – which is a lovely idea and surprisingly smart in practice.
The best of them add a three-dimensional bow, actually stitched on and standing proud of the fabric. Which is tremendous fun and does mean the jumper will catch on things. There is also a reliable seam of slogans here about being the best present under the tree, which is exactly as cheesy as it sounds and works beautifully on a child. A smaller section than reindeer or Santa, but a good one to browse if you want colour.
