The big man himself. Santa is the oldest and most reliable motif in festive knitwear, and this is one of the largest design sections on the site, because every retailer makes a Santa jumper and most of them make several.
He turns up in a few distinct forms and they are not interchangeable. There is the traditional Santa – a stylised face, white beard, red hat, often knitted into a Fair Isle band – which is the smart and timeless version. There is the full cartoon Santa, printed large across the front, usually with a three-dimensional beard in fluffy white yarn that is as satisfying to touch as it looks. There is the Santa suit jumper, which turns the whole garment into the costume, complete with a knitted belt and buckle across the middle. And there is a large body of slogan work on the general theme of the naughty list.
The fluffy beard is the detail worth paying for and the detail that needs looking after – it mats in a hot wash and never comes back, so cool water and no tumble dryer. A Santa jumper is also the best choice if there will be small children present, because they will be absolutely delighted, and that is worth more than looking understated.
