The snowflake is the most elegant motif in Christmas knitwear and the reason so many festive jumpers survive into February. It is geometric, it repeats beautifully, and crucially it is about winter rather than about Christmas – so a snowflake jumper has no expiry date on the 26th.
That makes this the section to browse if you want a festive knit that is genuinely a jumper. Snowflakes work at every scale: a single large flake across the chest, a scattering of small ones over the whole garment, or a Nordic band of six-pointed stars that is really Fair Isle doing what Fair Isle does best. Picked out in silver or white thread on navy, grey or deep red, it is about as good as this category gets.
Two things to look for. A knitted snowflake holds its shape and softens with age; a printed one flattens and eventually cracks, so check which you are buying. And sequinned or metallic flakes look superb and need a cool wash, flat drying and no tumble dryer whatsoever. If understated is what you are after, this and the Fair Isle section are where to spend your time.
