Spare a thought for the turkey. It is the only guest at Christmas dinner that did not want to be there, and the fact that it has become a popular jumper motif says something slightly uncomfortable about the British sense of humour. We are entirely in favour.
The jumpers mostly take the turkey’s side, which is what makes them funny. A turkey in a Santa hat, hoping very much that this changes things. A turkey running. A turkey with a slogan explaining exactly what it thinks of the whole arrangement. There is also a sub-genre in which the turkey has clearly won, and those are the best ones in the section.
Beyond the jumpers there is a proper tradition of turkey headgear – novelty hats shaped like the bird, which are exactly as ridiculous as they sound and absolutely worth the six pounds. They turn up every year and they are the single most reliable way to make a table laugh before the crackers come out.
This is one of our smallest sections because turkey knitwear is a niche, but it is a well-loved one, and it is the obvious choice for whoever is carving. Have a look at the funny and chef sections for more in the same spirit.
