There is a particular confidence required to go out in a jumper that only makes sense with another person standing next to you. Couples Christmas jumpers are not subtle and they are not meant to be – they are a public announcement, knitted, and they are one of the great pleasures of the season.
The designs split neatly. Some are matching pairs: the same knit, same print, two sizes, so you look like a set. Some are a his-and-hers gag that only lands when you are side by side – the plug and the socket, the two halves of a cracker, the milk and the cookies. And some are two-person jumpers proper, one enormous knit with two necks, which commits you to standing very close to each other for the entire party.
A word of practical advice: agree on the design together. The couples jumper that one person chose and the other person tolerated is visible from across the room, and it rather undoes the point. Pick it as a pair, and the photograph will be on somebody’s mantelpiece for years.
