Green is the Christmas tree colour, and the fact that there are fewer green Christmas jumpers than red ones is one of the genuine oddities of this trade. It is the better choice more often than people think.

Deep forest green is the grown-up festive colour – warm, traditional, and considerably easier to wear than scarlet if red is not your friend. It also sets off exactly the right motifs: a tree needs a dark green ground to look like a tree, holly reads properly against it, and a red bauble on green has the sort of contrast that a red-on-red jumper can only dream about. Tartan and plaid prints live here too, which is where this section quietly turns rather smart.

At the other end you have the bright greens, which is elf territory, and that is a different proposition entirely – loud, cheerful and no interest whatsoever in being understated. Sprout jumpers also belong to green, and the great sprout debate is beyond our remit except to say that the jumpers are considerably more popular than the vegetable. Have a look through both ends of the shade range before you decide.

Forest Fairisle Jumper

The Fair Isle band across the chest, as it has been since the 1920s. "Forest Fairisle" — someone was pleased with that, and fair enough.
