Not everybody wants a tasteful snowflake. Some people want to walk into the family buffet in something that makes an uncle put his drink down, and this is the section that serves them. Innuendo, double meanings, the odd thing that is not a double meaning at all, and a general air of having been designed after the second bottle.

The craft here is in the ambiguity. The best rude Christmas jumpers are the ones that work on two levels – an innocent image and a filthy reading, with the wearer entitled to claim they had no idea. Baubles are involved rather a lot. So are snowmen in compromising arrangements, elves behaving badly, and a long tradition of slogans about what exactly Santa is coming down the chimney for.

A sincere word of advice, because we do get asked. Read the jumper properly before you wear it to a work do, and have a think about where you will be on the 25th. The one that destroys the pub on the 20th is a different proposition at a table with a grandparent and a seven-year-old at it. Two jumpers is the professional answer. If this is a bit much, the funny section covers the same territory at a gentler setting.
