River Island approaches Christmas from the fashion end rather than the novelty end, which makes it a useful corrective if you have spent an hour looking at reindeer with pom-pom noses. The festive knitwear here is cut and styled like the rest of the range – cropped, oversized, embellished – and the Christmas element tends to be a sequinned motif or a sparkle yarn rather than a cartoon.
That makes it the right shop for a specific want: a party knit that is festive enough for December but will not look absurd in a photograph taken in March. Sequins, metallic thread, fine-gauge sparkle knits and jumper dresses are the strong suit, and they sit a great deal closer to eveningwear than anything on the novelty rail.
